Chemistry 1A / Biology 6A Placement Test

&

Biology 40A Placement Test

(Above tests are 2 separate tests that clear prerequisites for different courses)

The Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A test is one test. This test asks only chemistry questions and is the prerequisite for Chemistry 1A and Biology 6A Download sample test questions (PDF).

To be eligible for Chemistry 1A, a student must:

1. Obtain a satisfactory score (22 of 44) on the Chemistry1A/Biology 6A Test.
2. A student must also have completed the equivalent of high school chemistry ( Chemistry 50 at De Anza) and intermediate algebra with a grade of "C" or better. Students must provide transcript proof to Assessment Center to verify completion of prerequisites prior to enrolling.

Exception: Students completing De Anza's Chemistry 50 with a "C" grade or better are eligible for Chemistry 1A. They do not need to take the placement test or verify prerequisites.

To be eligible for Biology 6A a student must:

1. Obtain a satisfactory score on the Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A Test, OR
2. Complete De Anza's Chemistry 50, or Chemistry 1A with a grade of "C" grade or better.

The Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A Placement Test is 45 minutes. Test may be taken twice a year. (180-day minimum between tests) The results for Chemistry 1A are valid for 12 months from the test date. There is no expiration of results for Biology 6A. Calculators are allowed.

Biology 40A Placement Test. (This test is a different test than the Chemistry1A/Biology 6A test). This test asks only chemistry questions.

To be eligible for Biology 40A, a student must:

1. Obtain a satisfactory score on the Biology 40A Test (14 of 44), OR

2. Complete De Anza's Chemistry 50, or Chemistry 30A, or Chemistry 1A with a grade of "C" or better. Students who complete equivalent prerequisite courses at Foothill College must contact Assessment Office to clear the prerequisites prior to registration. Students who have completed equivalent prerequisite courses at other institutions must provide proof of completed prequisites to Biology Dept.

NOTE: Chemistry1A/Biology Placement test does not clear students for Biology 40A. Students must qualify on Biology 40A Test OR complete Chemistry 50, Chemistry 30A or Chemistry 1A with a grade of "C" or better.

The Biology 40A Placement test is 45 minutes. Test may be taken twice a year. (180-day minimum between tests) There is no expiration of results. Calculators are allowed. Test is comprised of 44 questions that are mostly chemistry based items.

Arrive minimum 30 minutes before scheduled test time. Bring photo ID, several #2 wood pencils, calculator, and know your De Anza 8 digit Student ID Number.

Test dates are as follows: NOTE: Chemistry 1A/Biology 6A and Biology 40A tests are administered in same room on same dates and times. Students are able to take only one of the tests on a test date. Tests are paper & paper timed tests. Calculator may be used. Check campus map for the location. Students must arrive 30 minutes before test time. No one admitted late.

*ADM 101 is located in Administration Building in center of campus. (Not in Student Community Services Bldg)
