Math Placement Tests: Basic Math, College-Level Math, Calculus Readiness

Basic Math (computerized) Test - This test asks Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra questions.For entry into Math 210, 212, 114 (formerly 210, 112, 114 sequence; formerly 200, 101, 105 sequence). Sample test questions may be viewed online.

College-Level Math (computerized) Test - This test asks Intermediate Algebra and Trigonometry questions. For entry into Math 10, 11, 44, 46, 51, 49A. See sample test questions.

Both Basic Math and College-Level Math (computerized) tests are administered in Computer Testing Lab in the Student & Community Services Building. Tests are on a computer and are not timed. Calculators are not permitted. There are no appointments. Students are seated on a first come basis Monday through Thursday. See days and hours in chart below.

Calculus Readiness test is group paper & pencil test that is only available on posted dates and times only.

Math tests may be taken twice per year (180-day minimum between tests). Results expire after one year. Students wanting to qualify for course work above Math 114 must take College-Level Math test or the Calculus Readiness Test. Students who place into a math course level are eligible to take that course and any math course below that level.

Students can also clear math prerequisites by providing college transcript proof of completion ("Pass" or grade "C" or higher) of prerequisite math courses to be eligible for Math 212, 114, 10, 11, 44, 46, 51, 49A . Students must provide proof to Assessment Center prior to enrollment. Students who have taken placement tests or completed prerequisite courses at Foothill must contact De Anza Assessment Center prior to registration.

Students must bring photo ID and know De Anza 8-digit Student Identification Number. For Basic Math Test or College-Level Math test arrive anytime between the listed hours. Students seated on first come basis. Students should allow a minimum of 1 hour for math testing.

Student & Community Services (SCS) is located on Stevens Creek Blvd end of campus. Assessment Center is located on first floor, SCS 143.


Calculus Readiness Test (paper & pencil test)

Calculus Readiness Test -- For entry into, Precalculus Math 49A, 49B, Calculus Math 1A
(Paper and Pencil Only)

All high school students and high school graduates must test and receive a qualifying score on the Calculus Readiness Test to be eligible for Math 49A, 49B or Math1A. High School courses do not clear prerequisites for Precalculus or Calculus courses. Exception: Students with qualifying scores (3 or higher) on College Board AP Calculus exams can provide a copy of AP exam report to Assessment Center for placement into appropriate Calculus course level.

College students can clear prerequisites for Math 49A, 49B or Math 1A by providing transcript proof of successful completion (grade "C" or higher) of equivalent college math courses or by receiving a satisfactory score on Calculus Readiness Test. Students must verify completion of prerequisites with Assessment Center prior to enrollment. High School math courses do not clear prerequisites. A qualifying score on the computerized College Level Math test also provides eligibility for Precalculus Math 49A.

Calculus Readiness Test is a 1-hour paper & pencil multiple-choice test. Calculators are not permitted. Test may be taken twice per year (180-day minimum between tests). Results expire after one year. Download (PDF) sample test questions: Calculus.

Students must arrive minimum 30 minutes before scheduled test time Students must bring photo ID, several #2 wood pencils, and know their De Anza 8-digit Student ID Number. There are no appointments. Students are seated on first come basis.
