What We Do

The mission of the Assessment Center is to provide students with English, English as a Second Language (ESL) and mathematics assessment services, and chemistry and biology testing so they can make informed decisions about registering for courses in which they are likely to succeed.

De Anza's Assessment Model

We assess a student's English and Math knowledge and skills using the placement testing result and high school transcript (HST), if available.

Who Needs to be Assessed?

  • Assessment is a key matriculation step required for any student interested in taking De Anza English, English as a Second Language (ESL) or Math courses.
  • Assessment is typically required for new students with no college course credit in English/ESL or math.

I am a new college student.

New students with no college course credit should be assessed before registering for classes.

Next Steps:

I have earned college course credit by AP Exam or transcript.

Students with proof of college English, ESL or math course credit (via AP Exam Scores, college transcripts) should contact the Evaluations Department and complete the prerequisite clearance process.

Alternatively, new De Anza students who choose not to submit their transcripts and can participate in the assessment process.

To meet the Assessment Criteria for Priority Registration, an official transcript or AP Exam Score Report must be provided during the prerequisite Clearance Process.

I have a degree from a U.S. University.

Students who have earned an AA/AS, BA/BS or higher from a U.S. university should contact the Evaluations Department and complete the prerequisite clearance process.

Alternatively, new De Anza students who choose not to submit their university transcripts and can participate in the assessment process.

I don't want to take English, ESL or Math at this time.

Assessment is only for students interested in taking English or ESL or math courses.

  • You may not need an assessment at this time.

  • Look up the course you wish to enroll in the Class Schedule and review the course's prerequisite.

I can't remember my assessment results.

Students can look up assessment results on MyPortal. Follow these three steps:
