About De Anza Badminton

In 2008-2009, after a five-year hiatus, Intercollegiate Women's Badminton returned to De Anza College. After 2nd place finishes in the Coast Conference from 2010-2012, the Dons won the Coast Conference and State Championships in 2013.

The De Anza Badminton Team is open to all students who are willing to commit themselves and work to excel at badminton. Prior competitive experience is desired but not required. Although the Women’s Traveling Team carries to 6-12 athletes to each match, and there is room for many more to take part in the training and exhibitions. The women's team annually visits Southern California to prepare for championship competition.

Male athletes who are willing to work will be afforded exhibition opportunities against collegiate opposition. In the last five years the men competed against Stanford,  San Jose State and Evergreen Valley.  Our goal to give all De Anza Students the opportunity to raise their level of play.

How to Join the Team

During the Fall quarter, the team will meet in the Badminton Techniques class, tentatively scheduled for Thursday evening/Saturday morning.  The class ID number will be posted when the fall schedule is available. Team candidates should be attending at least one or both workouts each week.  There will be three days during the quarter with tournaments with other schools and team candidates are encouraged to enter tournaments like the UC Davis Fall Open on their own.

In the Winter quarter the team trains Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  Scrimmages and pre-season tournaments commence in February with Coast Conference play running late March through early May.  The State Championships are the second weekend of May.

Academic Requirements: Full-time student status (10 academic units and 2 units of the intercollegiate women's badminton course for a total of 12 quarter units during the competitive season). Freshman or first-time competitors do not have a unit requirement pre-season. Sophomores or students who wish to compete for a second season must have completed 36 academic units prior to competing their second season. Athletes must maintain at least a 2.0 grade average. Our academic coordinator, Matt Trosper, can help you with more details in this area. Just call 408 864-8646.

Athletic Requirements: No previous competitive badminton experience is required to join the intercollegiate badminton class and try out for the team. All interested athletes are encouraged to register in the course and join in the training. The traveling team will be based on student's ability and commitment to building a winning team.
