Head Coach Nick Mattis

Nick Mattis

Coach Mattis will begin his sixth season at De Anza this fall. In his first five seasons he lead both the Men's and Women's teams to the California Cross Country State Championships each year, with the 2009 Women's team finishing 5th in the state.  The women's teams have won three Coast Conference titles in the first five years. 34 Men and Women student-athletes have been named All-Conference since Coach Mattis has taken over at De Anza.

Prior to coming to De Anza Coach Mattis worked in the Athletic Department for Montana State University.

He received his Master's Degree from Western Illinois University in Sport Management and his Bachelor's Degree in K-12 Physical Education from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, IA.

Coach Mattis has over 14 years of coaching experience ranging from Junior High to College in Track and Field and Cross Country.  He is also a Level 2 USATF Coach.

 

Assistant Coach Al Hernandez

Al begins his second season with De Anza Cross Country after coaching with the track and field team last spring.  Al was the distance coach for the 2003 Pan American Juniors Track and Field Championships in Barbados.  Al is a Level II certified USATF coach.  He also serves as the Men's Chair of the Pacific Association USA Track and Field.  Al was a Division II All American in the six mile run.  He qualified for the Puerto Rican Olympic Marathon Team in both 1976 and 1980.  He was inducted into the the San Francisco Hall of Fame in 2004 for his outstanding high school Track and Cross Country career.  Al and his wife live in Fremont.

Assistant Coach Angie Sandoval

Angie begins her second season coaching with De Anza Cross Country.  Angie ran for the Dons in 2007 and 2008 and was a state qualifying member of the 2007 cross country team.  She was also a state qualifier in track and field in the 10000 meter run and the 3000 Steeplechase.  Angie went on to compete at Mills College where she was a two-time NAIA National Qualifier in cross country for Mills and hold several records in track and field for Mills.  Angie earned her BA and MBA while at Mills College. 

Assistant Coach Jessica Burns

Jessica begins her third season helping with the track and cross country teams for De Anza.  Jessica was the Coast Conference Cross Country Champion in 2009 while running for De Anza.  She was also a state qualifier in track and field in the 1500 and 5000.
