***Kirsch Center wins prestigious first-place award***
The Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies on Oct. 18 won a first-place award for exceptional performance in occupant satisfaction, resource efficiency and overall design from UC Berkeley-based Center for the Built Environment (CBE). The Kirsch Center, conceived, operated and maintained by dedicated De Anza staff and faculty and named for donors Steve and Michele Kirsch, is a key component of the college's comprehensive sustainability efforts, which include the creation of one of the first Sustainability Management Plans in higher education. The development and implementation of the plan are the latest projects of the College Environmental Advisory Group (CEAG). Other major sustainability successes include the LEED® certification of the Science Center and the Student and Community Services Building; the Kirsch Center's LEED® platinum application and at least LEED® silver certification of the planned Visual and Performing Arts and Mediated Learning centers.
The construction of the Kirsch Center and the recent Campus Center, Administration and Planetarium building renovations incorporated extensive use of recycled and recyclable materials and the consistent use of low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, carpets and tile content. Food Services, located in the Campus Center, features organic produce choices from local agricultural sources and biodegradable paper products and utensils. All paper supplies provided by Custodial Services contain post-consumer recycled content, and custodians use toxic-free cleaning agents.
In addition, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been made more efficient and tie into the district's lauded energy management system. Landscaping projects at De Anza feature native and drought-tolerant plants; no pesticides are used. The college has a long history of recycling efforts, and plans are under way for a campuswide recycling education project.

Urban Arts and Hip Hop Festival
The Institute for Community and Civic Engagement (ICCE) will host De Anza's first annual festival featuring performances by local hip hop artists and dance teams, an art exhibition, local vendors and community organizations.

Moving Cultures (All Over the Map)
This exhibit features art related to moving cultures, whether from one location to another or changing over time. Enjoy artworks in multiple media.

La Voz Wins JACC Awards
On Oct. 13, De Anza students took home 15 awards from the NorCal regional conference of the Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC). The awards were primarily for stories, graphics and photos published in last year's (2006-07) La Voz Weekly. Students from approximately 25 northern California community college newspapers entered the competition, which was judged by professionals who work in the journalism field.
New Tool to Improve Ease of Web Content Updates
The pilot program for OmniUpdate -- our new Web content management system for www.deanza.edu -- is under way this fall quarter. We are using this pilot period to work out any issues in Web page conversion, training and usage prior to introducing it to the broader community. Full implementation and training is planned for winter 2008. If your department has been selected as a pilot user, the Web Team will contact you soon to schedule a training session on this new easy-to-use, Web-based tool for updating your site content. Campus Abroad Program
All full- and part-time faculty please note: Applications for the Campus Abroad Program are due no later than Friday, Oct. 26, to the Campus Abroad Office at Foothill College. Focus the Nation
A group is forming to plan an event to be held at De Anza (and many college campuses across America) on Jan. 31, 2008, called Focus the Nation. The event is designed to raise awareness and stimulate action around climate change. More planning committee members are needed and also faculty willing to devote a portion of their winter curriculum to climate change.
