Careers in Automotive Technology

two students under carAutomotive technicians help keep America rolling – literally. They have the skills to identify and repair problems with gasoline, diesel and hybrid vehicles, and perform the general maintenance that keeps those vehicles running in good condition.

Technicians work in settings from independent repair shops to new car dealerships. They may need both a broad knowledge of automotive mechanics  and specialized training to work on components such as brakes, transmissions, engines, electronics and climate controls.

Employment Outlook: 2016-2026

  • The number of jobs for automotive service technicians is expected to increase by 7%
  • Jobs for mechanics and repair supervisors are expected to increase by 9%

These ten-year projections are calculated by California's Employment Development Department, which collects data about the state's workforce and economic trends.

Automotive Technology at De Anza

three auto tech students with arms crossedThe Auto Tech Department offers both daytime and evening programs to help you meet your goals.

Students learn from experienced instructors in a 12,000-square-foot training center with 15 lifts, a powertrain laboratory, machine shop, stationary engine lab, dynamometer and the latest in tools and  equipment. 

NEW! We also offer FREE noncredit courses that don't require placement rests or prerequisites. These courses don't count toward a degree or academic certificate, but they can help you earn a noncredit General Service Technician (GST) certificate.

De Anza's Auto Tech Department is accredited by the ASE Education Foundation.
