Instructor: Tom Taber is a graduate of the University of California, Davis and author of “The Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Book.”
Class requirements: Must be age 14
or older. Students under 18 must take this class with an adult who has also registered. This course requires moderate physical activity. Students should be able to hike mountainous terrain and walk up to 6.5 miles. The instructor recommends wearing comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing.
Cost: $89
Dates and times: Field trips occurring on Sept. 26, Oct. 10 and 24 (three Saturdays), 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Locations to be announced.
 HIKING THE PARKS AND TRAILS OF THE SANTA
CRUZ MOUNTAINS (107)
Join instructor and guide Tom Taber
for a fun and informative course that combines online lectures with weekend field trips. Students will learn about flora, fauna, geology, wildflowers and history while exploring scenic parks
and trails. Each excursion will involve walking 4.5-6.5 miles in mountainous terrain. Frequent stops will be made to examine natural and historical features and to sample tasty treats made from native edible plants. Students will visit old-growth redwoods and a beautiful ridgetop at Sam McDonald County Park, cross the San Andreas Fault and a beautiful creek at Monte Bello Preserve, and enjoy beautiful views and a pond at Long Ridge Preserve.
