Community Service Learning: Reflecting on Reflections

This interactive workshop is for Community Service Learning faculty who want to deepen their knowledge and skill regarding:

1. The reflection process used in CSL classes
2. Their ability to assess a "good" student reflection (how to gauge and grade student reflections)
   
3. Resources of outstanding student reflections and how they got their students to write with that depth and clarity in making the connections between course content and the students' service learning experience.

Participants will practice gauging and grading student reflections using the ICCE Rubric.

Pin@y Educational Project (PEP):  Strategies to Engage Filipino American Students

This interactive workshop is for faculty and staff who want to deepen their knowledge and understanding regarding contemporary issues facing Filipino Americans, especially high school and college students. The workshop will feature a discussion of pedagogical strategies, resources and practices that PEP uses/developed to engage students.

Theater of the Oppressed

Community Scholar, Hector Aristizabal, will be presenting a performance based on a true story of being arrested and tortured by the US-supported military in Colombia. After the performance, Hector invites the audience into a brief dynamic meditation as a way to provide catharsis to the different emotions awakened by the theater piece. Afterwards using the techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed (please see description below), Hector invites participants to express their reactions to the images of torture by creating their own images in response.

Learning Together: How to Design A Tutoring Based Community Service Learning Project    9:00am-1:00pm  CDe Anza Campus Center, El Clemente Room   Participants will leave this workshop ready to do service learning in their classes. We will go over the goals and benefits of including service learning as a part of a class. We will also go over all of the nuts and bolts of how to do it. This workshop will focus on service projects where students work as tutors for primary and secondary students, but those interested in other forms of service are welcome to attend. You will be able to meet community partners ready to work with your students. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.
