Catalyst Procedures

DEFINITIONS:

Traditional web-enhanced courses use technology to enhance an on-campus course, but does not substitute any class time with online activities.

Hybrid courses If you plan to use technology-enhanced materials and activities to replace any on-campus class time, but less than 50%, it's considered a Hybrid course. Instructors of hybrid courses are required to indicate their online hours in the equivalent amount to their on campus class time. Hybrid courses are designated with Y at the end. For example, ACCT-001C-03Y

Distance learning courses meet less than 50% on campus and use online or other delivery methods to facilitate learning. Distance learning courses are designated with Z at the end. For example, ACCT-001C.64Z

You can use Catalyst course management system for any type of class.

  1. Request an account by e-mailing David Garrido at garridodavid@deanza.edu.
  2. Sign up for Catalyst training.
  3. Request a master shell for new course development.
  4. Once your course is built, follow specific instructions to activate course.
  5. After receiving notiļ¬cation that your course has been created on the live server, login to verify all course content has been set up correctly, and make necessary updates.
  • Existing users should follow steps 3-5 for any new course creation, and for activation of courses every quarter.
  1. Consult your division regarding your plans for integrating online components into your course.
  2. Contact April Qian in the Distance Learning Center (DLC) about your plans. We can assist you in figuring out the best path and technologies to meet your needs.
  3. If the hybrid course has not been approved for distance learning delivery,  complete the Curriculum Committee form (http://dilbert.deanza.edu/curriculum/) for the Request for Approval of Distance Education Delivery following instructions specified.

  4. Notify your scheduler so they can make appropriate notes for your course.
  5. Attend Catalyst training through Distance Learning Center, and follow Catalyst procedures to update, request activation and manage your courses.
  6. It is strongly recommended that you have at least 50% of the course materials built before class starts.

    You must complete steps 1 - 3 a quarter prior to the quarter you intend to offer the course, and for each course you plan to offer.

  1. Consult your Dean about your desire to teach a distance learning course.
  2. Contact April Qian in the DLC regarding training, course design and development, and support needed.
  3. If the course has not been approved for distance learning delivery,  complete the Curriculum Committee form (http://dilbert.deanza.edu/curriculum/) for the Request for Approval of Distance Education Delivery following instructions specified.

  4. Notify your scheduler so they can make appropriate notes for your course.
  5. Attend Catalyst training through Distance Learning Center, and follow Catalyst procedures to update, request activation and manage your courses.
  6. We recommend that you start to develop your course at least 2 quarters prior to teaching it live. Your course MUST be fully created (complete with content) before day one of class.
  7. Provide additional information on syllabus and orientation through DLC website and DELTA database or own website to students.

    You must complete steps 1 - 4 a quarter prior to the quarter you intend to offer the course, and for each course you plan to offer.

If you do not use Catalyst as the online course management system, then you need to obtain training and secure technical support resources on your own.

For any new or existing Catalyst users, if you want to use Catalyst for a live class in the upcoming quarter, you have to follow these steps to request activiation
