Welcome to Humanities 9! I have been teaching Religion and Philosophy courses in the Foothill/De Anza Community College District for over 30 years. I assure you that if you put your heart into this course you will get a great deal out of it. PLEASE NOTE: If students cannot attend the 3 scheduled on campus exams, it is the students responsibility to find a proctor in your area.
This is a general survey course. We will focus on basic fundamentals in the major religious traditions of the world. I will do my best to bring depth and breadth to the course through the various means available to us in distance learning. We will explore the religious dimension of human life and experience, including religious language, attitudes, images, myths, metaphors,
symbols, and the rituals relating the history and practice of religion, and we will observe how women and men throughout history and in different cultures have lived and expressed a religious faith based on their sense of the sacred.
Students in this course are required to view eleven video programs. Weekly reading assignments will be found in detail in the course syllabus.
Students who do the Online Orientation will need to come to the Distance Learning Center office to pick up the handouts that will not be included in the online syllabus.
Grading will be based on three exams and a 5-7 page Term Paper.
Be prepared to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week using and studying the course materials.

The video lessons for this course are also available as videostreams. If you
would like to access your video lessons from a computer you will need:
- RealPlayer installed on the computer.
- A high speed Internet connection.

and follow the logon instructions on this page. You will not be able to logon until
the first day of instruction.
If you do not already have RealPlayer you may download it for free. Some courses use Quicktime instead of RealPlayer. Instructions for downloading are in your Catalyst course.
Keep in mind that network congestion either at De Anza College or with your ISP can affect the smooth
delivery of the videostream.
