Welcome to my brand new, 100% online version of Business and Society (Business 21). I have endeavored to create a course that is interesting to take and easy to complete. This is a 5 unit course, so you will be expected to spend about 4-7 hours a week taking this course.
You will take this class in Catalyst. Information for first time users of Catalyst, including instructions for determining your user i.d. and initial password, can be found on the last page of this online orientation.
Be prepared to spend a minimum of 4 hours per week using and studying the course materials.
The url for the Catalyst system is
http://catalyst.deanza.edu. The only way to gain access to the course website is to be
registered in the course in the
MyPortal system. If you are registered in the course before the quarter begins, you will be able to access the course website beginning sometime Monday, January 7, 2013. If you obtain an add code from me and use it to add yourself to the course in the MyPortal system, you will be able to access the course website
a few hours after you add the course in the MyPortal system. On January 7, or as soon as possible thereafter, you should begin your course by logging into the course website for the first time and watching the three videos located in Topic 1, "Welcome to Business and Society at De Anza College." Here is a video that will walk you through how to do that:
http://www.screencast.com/t/huRhmvpI.
To begin the video in the new window, you must click the "Play" button. The play button is not labeled, but it is large and distinctive looking. It is a right-facing triangle surrounded by a circle. Once your video starts, you should hear me talking. If you don't, turn on your speakers or plug in headphones.
You can make the video about 20% larger by clicking the "full size" button. I have attached a picture of that button to this email also.
You should watch the video today, and do what it says either this Monday or as soon as possible thereafter. This video was recorded for my Fall 2012 students, but it is still accurate for you guys with the following minor corrections:
1. The course website will not be available "tomorrow" and it will not be available "September 24th." It will be available Monday, January 7, 2013. The official prediction of the distance learning department is that it will be available starting at noon on Monday, but in the Fall quarter it was available around 8AM.
2. The course you're looking for on the left side of the screen is not BUS 21 - Lilly, 12F, it is BUS 21 - Lilly, 13W.
3. The course number that will show in the "breadcrumbs" at the top of the screen once you get into the course will not be 12F_00308, it will be 13W_00286.
