Safety Training Workshops Active Shooter Survival May 31 and June 1, 2012
Recent gun violence at college campuses, including at nearby Oikos University, has increased feelings of vulnerability and anxiety among many classified professionals and faculty members. Learn how to be as prepared as possible in the event of a threatened or actual shooting incident.

As part of emergency preparedness, the Office of the President and Foothill-De Anza Police are cosponsoring training sessions presented by the UC Davis Police Department, whose Active Shooter workshop has a reputation of quality among higher education law enforcement agencies. You may attend, at either campus, any of the eight identical sessions. No RSVP is necessary.

October 21 & 22, 2011 - City of Cupertino Disaster Drill

Cupertino Citywide Disaster Drill October 21 & 22, 2011

Cupertino's annual citywide exercise is an opportunity for every member of the community to practice their earthquake safety and survival plans.

This year's focus is on individual survival skills including: proper methods of purifying water, how to get water from the water heater, natural gas, how to use a fire extinguisher and basic medical aid.

De Anza College's Learning Center Complex (Library, International Students, EDC, A/V, Call Center, LCW Computer Lab, Staff Development, Distance Learning)  will be participating in the drill on Friday October 21st and these departments will be closed between 11:00 a.m. and Noon. The rest of the campus will remain open on a normal Friday schedule. 

Staff parking Lot C1, where the ARC is located, will be unavailable for parking all day on Friday Oct. 21st.

The Area Resource Centers (ARC) will be open for viewing and staffed by volunteers from the City of Cupertino emergency response team during Friday Oct. 21st.  Faculty, Staff & Students are encouraged to visit the ARK to familiarize themselves with the type of supplies they should have on hand in their homes.

It is also an opportunity to visit the City Of Cupertino's Emergency Preparedness web site to remind ourselves what we should do to prepare for an emergency.

 

October 14, 2011 - Citizen's CPR Class

Citizen CPR training is designed to teach bystanders how to perform hands-only CPR. This class was open to all employees and was taught in English and Spanish.

August 16, 2010 - Crisis Action Team Training

Joe Horton, the College's Emergency Management Consultant, met with the Crisis Action Team members and presented an overview of the NIMS/SEMS plan, explained the responsibilities of the crisis action team members, and conducted a scenario based table top exercise.

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness in homes, workplaces, colleges and universities, and communities. Institutions of higher education across the country are fine-tuning and test-driving their emergency preparedness plans, testing their emergency notification systems, and conducting awareness sessions for students, faculty, and staff. They are also exploring how they can better leverage information and communications technologies to help them address every phase of emergency management: prevention-mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. The University of Maryland is taking a comprehensive approach to protecting its human, physical, and cyber assets and is exploring the use of social networking to enhance communication with stakeholders.

August 19, 2008 - Campus Wide Building Evacuation Drill

On Tuesday, August 19, 2008 between 9 a.m. and noon, the campus conducted an emergency training drill which included the activation of the campus building monitors, medical staff, crisis action team (CAT), emergency operations center (EOC) and the ARK.

This drill was conducted in accordance with the De Anza College emergency preparedness plan which is in compliance with the California and Federal Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD-5).

Marsha Hovey, the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the City of Cupertino along with many CERT volunteers participated in the training drill.

July 29 & 31, 2008 - Building Monitor Trainings
In preparation for the building evacuation drill on August 19, 2008 from 9 am - noon the campus held two further building monitor training sessions.The two sessions were held on July 29th and July 31st.

The training:
* reviewed and clarified information from the December 2007 simulated evacuation drill
* updated the building monitor checklists & guidelines based on feedback from the December 2007 drill
* gave specific details on the August 19th drill
* performed a physical walk-through to demonstrate how to evacuate a building

December 18, 2007 - Simulated Building Monitor Evacuation Drill and Crisis Action Team Activation
As a part of De Anza College's ongoing emergency preparedness training the campus conducted a simulated evacuation drill on December 18, 2007. Building monitors were contacted by phone and given the emergency scenario. Building Monitors walked their areas to simulate an evacuation. On completion of the walk-through, the building monitors reported back to the Crisis Action Team. Concurrently, the Crisis Action Team conducted a scenario based table top exercise. There was a joint building monitor and Crisis Action Team debrief after the drill.
December 17, 2007 - Building Monitor Training
As a part of De Anza College's ongoing emergency preparedness training the campus presented a practical, hands-on training session for building monitors.

The College's emergency management consultant, Joe Horton,  conducted the training on December 17 in preparation for the campus -wide simulated building evacuation drill on December 18, 2007.

The training:
* reviewed the contents of the building monitor emergency bags
* reviewed the De Anza College emergency preparedness plan
* provided an in-depth review of building monitor duties & responsibilities.
