Last
Updated: 5/9/2013
All the resources needed to
complete Assignments are located in Catalyst.
Week 1 Assignment:
- Homework due by Wed (Sec 01Y) / Thurs (Sec 03Y/3YH):
- Read sections 1.1 and 1.2 of Chapter 1
(The Foundations of Business, but not Economics) and all of Chapter
5 (The Challenges of Starting a Business) in your text and
be prepared to discuss it in class.
- You should print the
Lecture Notes
for Week 1B (the
folder is under Course Resources in Catalyst) and bring them to class
to facilitate
note-taking.
- We will be using the online
forum to meet classmates and begin the process of forming a team for
our simulation game. Click on the link for your section under Forming a Team
(in Catalyst) and post a message as directed there.
- If you missed our first
class, review the Lecture
Notes for Week 1A
(the
folder is under Course Resources in Catalyst)
and bring any questions you may have to
class.
- Hybrid Work Day: Since this is a
hybrid class, our class times each week have been reduced to allow you
to do an hour of Hybrid Work (separate from your normal homework
assignments). I call it your Hybrid Work Day. What follows is your
assignment for that time between Wednesday and the weekend.
- Register to obtain
a license to use the MikesBikes
Intro web-based simulation. (Instructions are posted
below.) You will get an email confirmation message if successful;
passwords will not be mailed out until next week. Students
who don't register for the simulation in a timely fashion will be
dropped from the course.
- Read
Chapter 1
of the Mike's Bikes
Players Manual (6 pages) and review the Mike's Bikes Overview Presentation. The Presentation shows the screens within the game, and a narrator explains what you see.
- Check your Forming a Team forum in Catalyst to see if
anyone has signed up for your team yet, or reply to a team that
interests you. (See above.)
Week 2 Assignment:
- Homework
due Mon/Tues:
- Read Chapter 12 (The Role
of Accounting in Business) in the text.
- Click on this Basic
Financial Statements link to have an interactive review of
the Balance Sheet and the Income Statement. Most
people find accounting to be challenging at first, so please spend some
time with this task. (Please
skip the section on
double-entry bookkeeping; it won't be covered in this class.)
- Check your Forming a Team forum
to verify whether you have a complete team yet! (See week 1
above.) Complete teams will
have 4 members who are already registered for the Mikes Bikes
Simulation. Teams will receive their passwords to the simulation game
by email after teams are finalized in class.
- Homework
due Wed/Thurs:
- Complete
the MB, Entrepreneurship & Accounting Homework. Please note that this homework is in quiz format in Catalyst, but you can redo it as many times as you want until Sunday night. Your score from your final attempt will be the one that counts as your homework grade.
- Teams will be formed
in class Wed/Thurs.
- Hybrid Work Day:
- First team meeting
at your predetermined time and location. Discuss your personal goals for the
class, how you will make decisions, attendance policies, etc., and get to
know each other! Decide upon a team name
& complete the
team accounting exercise (handed out in class).
Take careful notes, because each team member will need to enter the
answers into the form (posted under week 3 in Catalyst) to earn
credit.
