  • Review the instructor web siteMost of the documents which you will need can be found by following the link "My Classes" and then "Telecourse/Distance Learning BUS 10: Introduction to Business".   Make certain that you use the link for the Telecourse, not the Lecture course.
  • Review the Green Sheet which contains important course policies.
  • Subscribe to the class listserv.
    • If you do not have a personal email account yet, you can get instructions for how to get one on the page entitled Tools, Tips, and Resources on the instructor web site.

  • Complete weekly textbook/video/telecourse guide assignments:
    • Each week you have several chapters to complete (refer to the columns to the left).  You should read the first assigned text chapter and then watch the first video.  After viewing the video, turn to the chapter with the same name in the Telecourse Guide so that you may quiz yourself with the practice test. Then repeat this process with the other chapters and video assignments.  Be sure to note any difficult questions for review prior to the exam, because there are video questions on the exams.
  • Obtain a partner to help you learn the Mike's Bikes Game.
    • If you know someone in the class with whom you would like to work, then you simply need to email me his/her name along with your Test ID Number (next item below).  Otherwise, just let me know that you need a partner, and I will assign you to someone else who needs a partner.
    • The partnerships that we establish in this course are a lot like "General Partnerships" which you will explore in Chapter 5.   You will need to work closely to help each other understand and navigate the business.  If you can work together well, you can work together on assignments, submit only one assignment for the team, and hopefully achieve superior results.  But you are responsible for business results, regardless of what your partner does.  So if you encounter scheduling problems, management decision disagreements, or other irreconcilable differences, you may fold the partnership, and each submit the assignment on your own.  (If you plan on doing this, make sure your partner is notified.) You may also request a new partner as the course progresses (because some students may drop the course), and I will assign you to someone else who is looking for a partner at that time.
  • Select a Test ID Number.
    • This is the unique number that you will use to look up your grades on the instructor web site.  It should be at least 4 unique digits that you can remember easily.  Add zeroes to the right of the number until you get 9 digits.  For instance, I might choose the last four digits of my office phone number, because it is easy for me to remember.  Therefore, 861500000 is my unique Test ID number.
    • Please email this number to your instructor as part of this week's homework assignment. Don't forget to include the name of your partner or your request for a partner.  Use the fritzmichele@fhda.edu email address.  (Your instructor will email you back to confirm that she received your test ID and to provide you with the email address of your partner. Please do not use the listserv to communicate with your partner, because we will all be able to hear your strategies!)
  • IntroMike Game:
    • Install the MikesBikes-Intro CD on to your computer.  Instructions can be found printed on the CD-ROM. PLEASE DO NOT PROCRASTINATE ON THIS, BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE ANY TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES IT MAY TAKE A FEW DAYS TO RESOLVE WITH SMARTSIMS TECHNICAL SUPPORT!!! This is particularly important if you have an older PC or use AOL for your internet access.
      • For technical difficulties, email help@smartsims.com.  You should get a response within 24 hours. (Do not email your instructor.)
    • Begin reviewing the "Mikes Bikes Getting Started Powerpoint Presentation" posted on the instructor web site.  Note that you will need Powerpoint to view this file. If you don't have Powerpoint, you may use the computers in the Open Media Lab.

This week, you are working on your Year 1 (2004) decisions as a Brand Manager in the Marketing department.  This year, as Brand Manager, you are learning about advertising, public relations, and pricing.
