Maureen coordinates the program and arranges all externships in addition to teaching courses in the HTEC Department. Maureen has a background in both management and teaching. She managed and supervised in urgent care, family practice and occupation medicine for 18 years. Her teaching career has spanned 11 years in phlebotomy and medical assisting.
Kathryn Atwood, HDS, SRE
Kathryn teaches Medical Transcription classes. She has been an instructor in the field of medical transcription and healthcare documentation for 10 years. She is the Lead Healthcare Documentation Specialist for RadNet Corporation, San Jose Division. She has worked in the field of Medical Transcription for 25 years.
Patricia Hassel, RN, BSBA
Patricia (Pat), former HTEC Coordinator, teaches the introductory courses (HTEC 50) and HTEC 60A (Medical Terminology). Pat has a nursing background in both hospital and medical clinical settings.
Mary Lavin, CLS
Mary teaches HTEC 64B and HTEC 101A (Advanced phlebotomy course with the venipuncture lab). Mary is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist with many years of laboratory experience.
Roberta Powers, CMA
Roberta (Berta) has taught administrative courses at De Anza and West Valley Colleges for over fifteen years. She is a graduate of De Anza College's Medical Assisting program.
Juanita Russell, CLS
Juanita is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist who has many years of laboratory experience.
Roy Shurtliff, RHIT
Roy teaches HTEC 61 (Medical Communications) and HTEC 73 (Medical Law and Ethics). He has over 25 years of experience in the health information field. He currently holds the position of Director, Health Information Management Department, and is the Facility Privacy Official for a local acute care hospital.
