Successful Conclusion of Grant!
September 30, 2011 marks the last day of this 3-year, $1.25 million AANAPISI grant that has made so much possible.
Our federal grant project has successfully shown that the academic success rates of Filipino, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander students can be raised to equal or exceed the college’s average success rates, despite the historically lower achievement levels of these groups.
Use of the award significantly raised the success and persistence of these students through grant activities such as:
- targeted outreach and counseling,
- summer college-readiness program,
- culturally-relevant English and general education courses, and
- team-teaching in learning community class settings.
The grant not only met all of its enrollment, success and persistence goals; it also documented the critical importance of culturally-relevant course content to motivate students from culturally marginalized families.

APIASF Community College $2,500 Scholarship Application Deadline
The Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) is partnering with the Walmart Foundation to offer $2,500 scholarships to incoming freshmen of Asian American and Pacific Islander descent at City College of San Francisco, De Anza College or South Seattle Community College.

Date/Time: July 5 – August 4, Tues - Thurs, 10 AM – 5 PM
Instructors: Michael Chang, Christine Chai, Jim Nguyen, and an intern staff of Instructional Mentors
The APALI Youth Leadership Academy is a special college-level leadership class exploring Asian American and Pacific Islander community and civic involvement. Students gain valuable knowledge and personal empowerment - benefiting from:
- non-traditional, exciting, hands-on curriculum
- guest speakers from public officials to community leaders and experts
- an all-day community tour
- a city-hall presentation
- assisting with APALI’s annual benefit banquet
APALI alums agree, “APALI is more than a class, it is an experience!”

The LinC Summer Institute is an annual event that facilitates faculty development and offers training in methods for teaching integrated learning communities that increase the likelihood of student success, with a focus on developmental to college-level courses. The DSILC includes sharing of best practices related to the teaching and design of learning communities, cohort learning, and other interdisciplinary learning models.
Activities include:
- Participatory panel presentations on culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogy
- experiential learning activities and integrative assignment design
- faculty collaborative working sessions
- faculty self-reflection and discussion
- sharing on best practices, challenges, and pedagogical approaches/materials
- closing session
This is the 6th year that LinC has offered this Summer Institute for Learning Communities, and the 2nd year that it has been supported by IMPACT AAPI.
