IMPACT AAPI

Student Success Activities

De Anza has a number of existing student success and counseling programs and services to help new students transition to the new challenges of college life, as well as support current students in reaching their academic goals.

IMPACT AAPI is expanding these programs, which are already targeted toward historically underrepresented and first-generation college students, to include resources tailored for the educational needs and experiences of AAPI students.

IMPACT AAPI focuses on:

See calendar for details.

New Student and Parent Open House

Each spring, De Anza holds an Open House event for students who will enter college in the fall and their parents. The event introduces incoming students and their parents to various college services, including:

  • admissions & records
  • counseling & advising
  • transfer services
  • financial aid
  • campus security
  • physical education facilities
  • academic programs
  • student services

IMPACT AAPI is adding break-out sessions in various Asian languages, including Cambodian, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. Since De Anza is a community college, many AANAPI students live at home, where their parents may play an influential role in their educational lives. Adding multilingual sessions to the Open House targets AANAPI students, while engaging their parents and encouraging them to be supportive of their child's education.

Open House will be:
Saturday, May 16, 2009
Student & Community Services Building
10am-2pm

Summer Bridge

Summer Bridge is an existing De Anza program, designed to assist new students in their transition to the college. The program is targeted toward historically underrepresented and first-generation college students.

IMPACT AAPI is expanding this program to include a cohort of 40 AANAPI students for summer 2009 and 2010, with cohort-based program sessions that are specific to the educational needs and experiences of the underserved AANAPI populations targeted by our project.

Participants are co-enrolled in Counseling 100 (Orientation to College) and Human Development 20 (Life Skills for Higher Education) for 4 units of college credit.

New Student Intake Protocol

The New Student Intake Protocol is a new initiative at De Anza, created by IMPACT AAPI. The Intake Protocol's purpose is to assess the support/counseling needs of incoming AANAPI students before and during fall quarter, and help them enroll in the necessary programs or classes that will ensure they start the year off strong.

First-Year Experience (FYE)

The First-Year Experience is a cohort-based, year-long interdisciplinary sequence of classes that combines academic coursework, community engagement, and student support services. It targets historically underrepresented and first-generation college students.

IMPACT AAPI is expanding FYE to include 40 students from AANAPI subgroups whose course success rates are below the college average.

Veterans Initiative

We are collaborating with Shari Pasquali and Nik Valbuena of Veterans Services to produce the Veterans Initiative, a year-long series of events and workshops for De Anza veteran students, many of whom are AAPI.

Workshop topics include adjusting to civilian life, creating educational plans, identifying career goals, and understanding the GI Bill and what it entails.
