Federal Income Tax Help

University of Texas at Austin International Office has designed a web site to assist international students, scholars, researchers and other nonresident aliens in preparing U.S. tax returns and required declaration statements at no cost to the user.

http://www.utexas.edu/international/taxes/

The University of Texas at Austin welcomes users from across the nation to access their site. They built the site with the intent of affording their students easy access to information and enabling them to become self-sufficient in the preparation of necessary federal and local forms.

This site contains step-by-step instructions for determining which forms are required, Frequently Asked Questions, and many links to sites with additional information about the federal tax filing requirements of nonresident aliens. The site includes many up-to-date examples of the required forms and a complete list of treaties that may affect the tax treatment of various types of income.

The site is designed to accommodate both experienced and novice filers with the ability to download forms and/or access easy to follow guides to preparing both returns and declaration statements.

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (available at no cost at www.adobe.com) is required to download the forms and publications available on the web site.
  • Forms on the site are fillable but will not be saved at the site. Users should print any completed forms before leaving the web site.
  • Instructions for completing forms are generally not on the same page as the form itself. Users should print the forms instructions for reference before beginning form completion online.
  • Data will be lost if the user is timed out while preparing a form.

Some of the information on the web site is specific to University of Texas-Austin student body. Users outside of the University are encouraged to check with their educational institution's respective office handling International aspects for questions that may be pertinent to their state and local area.

A significant advantage to the University's web site is its global access. Users do not have to sign on or log in. users are not required to attend or be affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin in order to use the site.
