All F-1 visa students, whether they work or not, are required to submit documentation to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for tax purposes.  The ISP office is not able to advise students on how to file taxes, so please use the resources referenced on this page for assistance.

Tax Filing Deadlines:

 

  • If you worked in 2017, the last day to meet your Federal and California state tax obligations is

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

 
  • If you did not earn any income in the U.S. in 2017 but were present in the U.S., or for spouses and dependents/children, the deadline for filing a federal Form 8843 is

Friday, June 15, 2018

 



Special Note: Please do not use other software packages to help you file your taxes since they are not designed to understand complex non-resident tax issues, such as tax treaties, etc. Moreover, the IRS does not currently allow Forms 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ to be filed electronically.

 Remember, ISP staff CANNOT advise you on HOW to fill out your taxes!
