I am an Environmental Engineering major and Student Leader.  This is my third year at De Anza and I've been a LEAD student for most of that time. Participating in LEAD has helped me become more involved on campus and I have since become the Co-Founder And Co-President of Women Empowered Club. This year I will be mentoring in Women Studies courses and I hope to create a continuing resource at De Anza that helps women students overcome retention challenges by connecting them to the resources they need to succeed.

I am a hydrology major that has been involved for a while, and now LEAD President. While doing a lot of environmental work at De Anza, I have also helped in budget issues and am now working on bridging the gap between student athletes and student activists by bringing greater attention to athletics.

As a returning student, I came to De Anza with the hope of completing a degree in psychology or education. I was tired of struggling and saw education as a means to improve my life. Since becoming a De Anza student, I have both learned and shared far more than I had expected. I learned that there wasn’t a simple solution such as a degree and that I wanted more for myself than a job. I learned that I wanted to take the rough experiences from my life and turn them from being something horrible to something I could learn from and share with others to also learn from. As a result, I decided to change my educational goal into a double major in psychology and women studies.

The opportunity to mentor for LEAD provides me with the chance to give back to the De Anza community. I enjoy each LEAD class I am given the opportunity to mentor in because I can share this unique experience with my fellow students. In this sense, I value knowing the mentors' role in creating communities and success for not only students grades, but for what each student contributes in our classes.

I’m Yena Cheong, freshmen in De Anza College. LEAD mentor is one of the impacts that influenced me as a student in De Anza. As a mentor, I develop communication skills, interactions, and social bonding within Familías. The reason why I want to be a mentor is because I saw difference from my sister who is LEAD mentor alumni. She would mentor in school and at home in order to help me with my school. Being a mentor make me feel more interacted to students and also to De Anza College. I act different in order to be an example to other students. It creates more bondage and actually feels like having another family.

Although my educational journey at De Anza has just started, I have always been highly invested in academia. I am planning to double major in Cultural Anthropology and Psychology. This is my first year with LEAD, but I have participated in a number of leadership-oriented programs, such as Santa Clara Sister Cities Association, Congressman Mike Honda’s Student Advisory Council, and Unity Program of Abraham’s Vision. I look forward to LEAD’s opportunities to create a sense of family and community within De Anza’s culture. As an avid listener of stories, my focus is on creating a safe space for interpersonal communication while promoting academic achievement.

I am an undecided major, partly because I enjoy so many things. I have two dogs a Dutch Shepherd named Princess and a male German Shepherd named Hunter. I absolutely love hiking and scuba diving. I enjoy economics and environmental science, especially the relationship between the two. I was born in England in a city called bath, and moved to the United States in 1997.

I’ve been going to De Anza for three years and am a Liberal Arts major. I want to someday work with children, hopefully helping them overcome some of the obstacles that I have also had to face. I took my first LEAD class two years ago. I became more involved not only in the club, but also by becoming a mentor, during summer quarter 2012. Helping people is something I’ve always been passionate about and LEAD is the best opportunity I’ve had thus far at De Anza to do that. Before LEAD, I felt completely isolated and alone on campus, with no sense of community. By mentoring with LEAD, I have not only found that sense of community, but I am now able to reach out to others and help them to also not feel alone. I love being a mentor and can’t imagine doing anything more rewarding.

I’m majoring in Liberal Arts and I have been involved with LEAD almost a
year. I’m from Iran and I was looking for a club to be active in. I was introduced to
LEAD when I took EWRT 211. I have a passion for working with children (k-12).
LEAD helped me to be myself and follow what I’m passion about. At the beginning I
had a hard time being involved on campus because I was trying to stay away from
politics. Going to classes and studying social justice made me realize that whatever I
do or wherever I go, they all are related to me. As a mentor I am able to help other
students so they can understand we all need to be proactive.

I am an English Literature major in my last year here at De Anza. I currently hold a position on the Board of Trustees as Student Trustee for the 2012-2013 school year where I work on educational policy and focus on statewide issues affecting students. Last year I held the position of Vice President for Latino\a Empowerment at De Anza where I worked on social justice issues surrounding immigrants in America. This year I am going to work with the latino and LGBTQ students to help increase college access and to work on projects that help bring to light inequalities these groups face.

For the past two years, I have been attending De Anza college not knowing anyone I went to school with. Last spring, I took a LEAD class and for the first time, felt connected to the people around me. Now I am a LEAD Mentor and enjoy the sense of community a LEAD classroom offers students. LEAD enables students to connect to the people in their classes and creates a familia dynamic. Not only do students who take LEAD classes tend to have a higher rate of success, they also grow to have friends and a deeper sense of community.
