FOR RELEASE: CONTACT: CREATIVE ARTS THRIVING AT DE ANZA CUPERTINO--De Anza College — with its Creative Arts programs thriving and construction of its Visual and Performing Arts Center well under way — once again is the only community college represented in the Student Film Competition at the Cinequest Film Festival. Meanwhile, renowned Hollywood producer Gary Goldstein ("Pretty Woman," "The Mothman Prophecies," "Under Siege") and venerated screenwriting instructor Richard Walter are slated for campus events. Cinequest Entries The De Anza student productions will compete among the 17 films in Cinequest's Student Film Competition, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 2, at the Camera 12 Cinemas, 201 South Second Street, San Jose. In addition to De Anza's, entries includes shorts from the film programs of USC, UCLA, Stanford University, Columbia University, Chapman University and University of Texas, Austin, as well as from international programs at the University of Munich and Royal College of Art in London. De Anza College alumnus Kurt Kuenne has two films in the Cinequest lineup. His documentary feature "Dear Zachary: a letter to a son about his father," vying in the Maverick Competition, plays at 7 p.m. on March 1 and 4:30 p.m. on March 3 at the Camera 12 Cinemas. A screening will also be held at the San Jose Repertory Theatre (101 Paseo de San Antonio, across from the Camera 12 Cinemas) at 6:30 p.m. on March 2. Variety referred to the 95-minute documentary about the murder of Dr. Andrew Bagby, Kuenne's friend from the time they were children growing up in San Jose, as "the talk of Slamdance." The Park Record named "Dear Zachary" one of the most talked-about films in Park City during this year's Slamdance and Sundance film festivals. Kuenne's "The Phone Book" is slated for the "Shorts Competition Program 7: Life Lesson" at 9 p.m. on March 5 and noon on March 8 at the Camera 12 Cinemas. Cinequest is ranked among one of the world's top ten film festivals, according to the "Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide." This year's event will take place Feb. 27 through March 9. For Cinequest information and tickets, visit www.cinequest.org. NOTE: High-resolution images from the De Anza College Cinequest entries are available. Film Industry Guests From 2-5 p.m. in Advanced Technology Center (ATC) 120, Goldstein will hold a master class, "The Business Behind the Business of Screenwriting and Producing in Hollywood: Success Strategies for Launching Careers." From 7-10 p.m., there will be a screening of "Pretty Woman" followed by Q&A with Goldstein, who will discuss the evolution of the original script from the gritty tale of a drug-addicted prostitute to that of the now-iconic romantic comedy. Richard Walter, the internationally known screenwriting instructor and co-chair of the graduate screenwriting program at UCLA, as well as a bestselling author and television personality, will visit De Anza College at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, also at the ATC. The topic will be screenwriting, storytelling and the business of it all. According to the Wall Street Journal, Walter is "the prime broker for one of Hollywood's hottest commodities: student writers." De Anza College, this year celebrating its 40th anniversary, consistently ranks as one of the top two institutions in California in transferring students to the UC and CSU systems. The college provides an average of 24,000 students each quarter with general education and vocational courses as well as interdisciplinary studies, community service opportunities, on-the-job-training, internships, collaborative programs with businesses and industries, and online and television classes.
