DE ANZA TO PARTICIPATE IN SECOND NATIONAL TEACH-IN ON GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTIONS
Environmental Sustainability a Longtime Focus of the College

CUPERTINO — For the second consecutive year, De Anza College will join hundreds of colleges and universities in solutions-driven dialogue on global warming. The "National Teach-in on Global Warming" will be held Thursday, Feb. 5, and at De Anza will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hinson Campus Center A&B.

The event will include discussions on the green economy and green careers, as well as workshops and a 12:30 p.m. policymakers panel featuring De Anza President Brian Murphy with Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees President Laura Casas Frier; Cupertino Mayor Orrin Mahoney; Cupertino Councilmember Dolly Sandoval, who also serves as chair of the VTA board of directors; and Chris Schwarz, aide to U.S. Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.).

De Anza has a longstanding commitment to environmental sustainability. Its Kirsch Center for Environmental Studies, which last year was honored with a first-place finish in the Center for the Built Environment's "Livable Buildings Awards," also in 2008 became the first LEED® platinum-certified building among community colleges nationwide. De Anza's just-opened Visual & Performing Arts Center is slated to be certified LEED® silver; the Science Center and Student & Community Services buildings are also LEED® certified. The college's Environmental Advisory Group (CEAG) created one of the first Sustainability Management Plans in higher education. De Anza's Food Services, located in the renovated and environmentally-friendly Campus Center, features organic produce options from local sources and biodegradable paper products and utensils. In addition, landscaping projects at De Anza feature native and drought-tolerant plants fertilized with compost from Food Services fruit and vegetable trimmings; no pesticides are used.

"We are proud to again participate in this event," said Murphy. "Given De Anza's deep commitment to both environmental sustainability and civic engagement, we're pleased to provide students the opportunity to engage in and contribute to positive change."
