FOR RELEASE: CONTACT: U.S. Education Secretary to Deliver Keynote at 2010 De Anza College Commencement Ceremony CUPERTINO---U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will deliver the keynote address at De Anza College's 43rd annual graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 26, at the Outdoor Events Arena. **Commencement will begin at 9 a.m., with Duncan slated to speak shortly after 9:30. Press credentialing is not required, but reporters attending are asked to RSVP by Friday, June 25, to De Anza Communications Director Marisa Spatafore (contact information above). Reserved media seating will be located at the front left section of the audience. A house audio feed will be made available upon request. Duncan will also speak at the Foothill College commencement at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 25. In addition, U.S. Under Secretary of Education Martha J. Kanter will attend De Anza's and Foothill's ceremonies. She served as president of De Anza College from 1993 to 2003 and as chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District from 2003 to 2009. "We are deeply honored to have the nation's top education leader, who has highlighted the critical role of community colleges, here at De Anza," said college President Brian Murphy. "Secretary Duncan will be a great inspiration to our students as we honor their passage to further education and new and better careers." STUDENT AWARDS More than 1,900 students this year will graduate from De Anza College with degrees and certificates. Major scholarship winners include Michelle Lee, Haig V. Haig, Danielle Keene, Michelle Chacon and Laura Belardes.
While attending De Anza, Lee was a science and math tutor, college fundraising volunteer, campus clothing drive director and vice president of service for Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Lee also volunteers at Kaiser Hospital and the San José Animal Care Center. She says her passion for service began in summer 2007 when she participated for three weeks on an international volunteer team in Taiwan, helping underserved children learn basic math, science and English. The annual scholarship is presented in memory of A. Robert DeHart, founding president of De Anza College. It is awarded to a graduate who exemplifies service and participates in campus life relating to his or her personal values and goals.
Haig's community work includes fundraising and event preparation for St. Andrews Armenian Apostolic Church in Cupertino and serving as a Boy Scout through the nonprofit organization Homenetmen.
Keene works as a special education teacher's aide at a local high school, where she acts as a translator, advocate, tutor, mentor and confidant for students. She is also a co-adviser for the Gay Straight Alliance at Los Altos High School. She volunteered for the Obama campaign as well as the No on Prop 8 campaign. Keene has been a member of the National Art Honor Society, Science Club and Student Council. The President's Awards, worth $2,000 each, are presented annually to two graduating students who have overcome significant adversity or obstacles and have shown great perseverance in seeking an education at De Anza.
Her community service includes being a translator in the ESL program at the First Unitarian Church of San José (Third Street Community Center), and fundraising for the EHC LifeBuilders, a network of emergency shelters in Silicon Valley.
Belardes, a single mother of three girls, works as a birth recorder for Kaiser Foundation Hospital in San José. She volunteers in her daughters' classrooms and chaperones their school field trips. De Anza College has served the students of Silicon Valley for 40 years. De Anza consistently ranks at or near the top in transferring students to four-year universities. The college provides an average of 25,000 students each quarter with outstanding general education and vocational courses as well as interdisciplinary studies, community service opportunities, on-the-job-training, internships and online and televised classes.
