Canvas Certification

De Anza College will switch from using Catalyst (Moodle) to Canvas as the college standard course management system for online and other courses during the 2016-17 school year. Faculty may continue to use Catalyst through Spring 2017 if they wish, but Canvas will be available beginning Winter 2017 and faculty who wish to use the college standard CMS should plan to transition their courses to Canvas by Summer 2017.

You must complete Canvas Certification before you can use Canvas with your students.

We are offering two certification options - one for those new to Canvas and one for those with Canvas experience.

Legacy Support for Catalyst

This year, our focus will be on training and transitioning people to Canvas. We will provide legacy support for previous Catalyst users only.

This means:

  • There will be no more Catalyst training offered. Canvas training will begin in Fall 2016, with instructors able to use Canvas beginning Winter 2017.

  • Creation of new Catalyst accounts will be limited only to those who want to supplement their face-to-face classes and have used Catalyst/Moodle before. This applies to Fall 2016 only. Beginning Winter 2017, only Canvas accounts will be created for new users, and they must take Canvas Certification Training.

  • If you currently use Catalyst, you may continue to do so through Spring 2017. You don't have to take Canvas training this fall - it will be offered in winter and spring as well.

  • If you are a new faculty member wishing to share files with students in Fall 2016, we encourage you to use your faculty website (OmniUpdate) or Course Studio, neither of which require in-person training.

You can request a faculty profile page in OmniUpdate here:
    http://deanza.edu/webguide/omniupdate/faculty-guide/facultyprofile_request.html

Documentation for Course Studio can be downloaded here:
    http://deanza.edu/learningresources/technology/PDF/Course%20Studio%20Basics.pdf
  • We understand that many faculty are interested in offering access to an online grade book for students, which is not possible with OmniUpdate or Course Studio. We ask for your patience this quarter as we begin phasing out Catalyst and start rolling out Canvas. You will be able to use Canvas for this purpose beginning Winter 2017.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Canvas shell and experiment?

From us? Not quite yet. The Online Education Center is just now exploring how to most effectively implement Canvas in a way that works best for students and our online instructors. This is something we're hoping to offer later in Summer 2016. For now, you can request a shell from Canvas and experiment.

If I learn Canvas on my own or have already been trained in Canvas, will I still need to take Canvas training offered by De Anza Online Ed?

We very much want people to learn as much as they can on their own, and we don't want anyone to duplicate efforts. However, there will be a training component that will specifically deal with policies and procedures are De Anza, and regardless of the training you do on your own, you will need to complete that component when it's offered beginning fall 2016.

If you already use Canvas or have been/will be trained at another institution/organization, we will work with you on an individual basis. Please contact onlineeducation@deanza.edu with questions.
