Art & Design
CADD: COMPUTER-AIDED DRAFTING & DESIGN WITH MODEL MAKING (Miller Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th – Everything from guitars, cars, toys, houses, candy bars, Legos, and clothing are designed using CAD and 3-D technology. Architects, designers, and inventors know that if you can think it, you can make it! In this class, students will use the latest software to explore the process of design in architecture. Ever wanted to design a skate park? How about a colony on Mars? Or maybe your own human-sized hamster house! Using AutoCAD and Sketch Up 3-D software, students will learn the basics of drawing on the computer and architectural design to create their own structure. We will also work hands-on with balsa wood models. No prior knowledge with computers is necessary. Students must have access to an email address. Students will need to bring their own PC or Macintosh laptop computer to class each day along with pencils, eraser and a notebook.
CARTOONING AND COMIC ART
Entering grades 2nd & 3rd – In this class, students learn to create original cartoon characters, settings and storyboards. They explore different aspects of cartooning and develop a cast of unique characters. Drawing techniques for creating the illusion of depth and form are practiced along with other innovative mark-making exercises. They work with a variety of media and create a Claymation model to draw from. Includes all art supplies.
CLAY AND SCULPTURE
Entering grades 2nd to 5th – Students will learn to work with clay and other materials to create original works of art. They’ll practice a variety of clay and sculpture construction techniques and improve three-dimensional visual thinking and problem solving skills. Projects will include relief tiles, action figures, animal habitats, and much more. Clay projects will be fired and glazed. Includes all art supplies.
DIGITAL ART AND ANIMATION (Faria Only)
Entering grades 4th &5th – Students will learn to use Alice, DrawPlus X5, and other computer drawing, cartooning, and animation programs to create original works of art, interactive stories, and short animations. They’ll develop important art, design, and problem-solving skills, and learn how to think creatively and reason systematically. Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop computers.
DIGITAL CARTOONING AND COMICS
Entering grades 6th to 10th – Discover the secrets of digital magic that professional artists and cartoonist’s use and learn to work with powerful digital art software and tools. Create cartoons and comics in a variety of visual styles including Manga and enhanced photo-realism. We’ll analyze content and narrative devices such as flashbacks and foreshadowing and explore cultural and historical aspects of cartooning. Applying key art and design principles will make work shine. Students should bring a USB Flash drive for saving work. Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop computers.
DIGITAL DRAWING & GRAPHIC DESIGN (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 6th to 9th – Learn from a professional artist and graphic designer how to create great digital illustrations, drawings, and paintings as well as logos, eye catching web banners, and exciting effects using DrawPlus X5 and other design software. We’ll use shape builder, blending, and 3D conversion tools, convert photos into vector images, and make animated gifs and keyframe animations to use in graphic designs and digital drawings. Creative and critical thinking exercises will help inspire originality and build each student’s creative platform. Students should bring a USB Flash drive for saving work. Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop computers.
DRAWING AND PAINTING
Entering grades 2nd to 5th – Using ingenuity and a range of media, students will explore drawing and painting from observation and imagination. They will learn the fundamentals of color theory and composition, and how to do more detailed renderings. Students will also build technical and creative thinking skills, develop artistic confidence and bring their ideas to life. Includes all art supplies.
DRAWING AND PAINTING STUDIO
Entering grades 6th to 10th – In a focused studio atmosphere, students will learn and practice a variety of classical and contemporary drawing and painting techniques. They’ll strengthen observational and creative thinking, sharpen rendering skills and gain confidence in their artistic abilities. Lessons will include multi-point perspective, depicting shadow and light sources, and creating dynamic compositions.
GRAPHIC DESIGN & COMPUTER ART (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 10th – Using professional design tools including Adobe Photoshop CS6, students will learn key software interfaces and foundational art principles. Good design is so important in creating effective media projects. Activities will include logo designing, creating posters and CD covers, composing original digital artworks using a variety of artistic filters and effects, and other creative media projects. Learn to be a top visual communicator in the field of multimedia. Students should bring a USB Flash drive for saving work. Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop computers.
HOW TO DESIGN GREAT MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 9th – The course will cover the broad topic of presentations. Today it is vital that students develop the skills to communicate clearly but also artistically. To accomplish this, students need to develop a range of multimedia skills when they create a presentation. This summer course will cover the following multimedia topics: photo and photo manipulation, audio creation and podcasting, and typographical layout skills. The first topic will focus on photo manipulation and center around the creation of a visual personal poster. The second topic is the creation of a documentary podcast and will include working in groups. The third will be a visual branding cover spread, and include photo manipulation as well as learning typographic skills. All three of these projects will use PowerPoint to share and present. Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop or tablet computers for each student.
INTRODUCTION TO WOOD WORKING (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th – In this class, students will learn how to turn wood on the Lathe, to cut intricate patterns using the Scroll Saw and make Wood Burning Projects using our Detail Master Wood Burners. Students will gain knowledge of materials such as different types of wood, paints, stains, oils, sand paper and the various techniques for proper sanding and finishing of wood projects. Some exciting projects students can create include Gum Ball Machines, Pens, Puzzles, Name Plates, Cars and much more! Students will complete a Safety course that covers every aspect of safety for each machine and the wood shop. All materials included and no experience required.
JEWELRY AND FASHION DESIGN (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 6th to 9th – Find out how jewelry designers get inspiration for their collections and start to develop your own line. Students will learn about jewelry design and jewelry making techniques such as beading, wire construction, metal stamping and dapping, and polymer clay canes and beads. Students will work with other innovative materials and apply a multitude of decorative techniques to their original designs. Includes all art supplies.
SCIENCE AND ART
Entering grades 2nd & 3rd – Both science and art involve examining and explaining the world around us. This STEM to STEAM-based class will focus on creativity, curiosity, imagination, and attention to details—traits that artists and scientists share. Students will learn about patterns in nature, animals and habitats, the Earth and space, and scientific investigation through artistic processes. Includes all art supplies.
SCULPTURE AND CERAMICS
Entering grades 6th to 10th – Create original sculptures and ceramic artwork in a focused studio environment. Learn and practice different clay and sculpture techniques and strengthen observational, analytical, and creative thinking skills. Students will also look at works by notable sculptors from around the world and design their own masterpieces. Ceramic projects will be glazed and fired. Includes all art supplies.
SEWING AND FASHION DESIGN (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 10th – Learn about fashion design and sewing techniques including operating a sewing machine, pattern cutting and hand sewing plus embroidery. Create a new garment, a tote bag, and your own accessories. Deconstruct and restyle an eco-fashion. Start developing your own fashion line and invent the next popular trend in fashion! Includes all art supplies.
SPANISH – BEGINNING
Entering grades 6th to 9th – Class fee includes book and materials. Students will be provided with basic survival vocabulary that will include practical phrases. Listening, speaking and reading skills will be emphasized. Students will be exposed to the culture and customs of Spanish speaking countries.
SPANISH – INTERMEDIATE
Entering grades 7th to 9th – Prerequisite: Students must have completed two years of Spanish or equivalent to enroll in this Intermediate class. In this class, there will be an emphasis on conversation and written communication. Intermediate students further their knowledge of verb conjugation and acquisition of situational vocabulary. Speaking skills will be emphasized; reading and writing activities will focus on public speaking. Students will be learning about various Hispanic cultures, customs and traditions in a motivating and fun learning environment. Class fee includes book and materials.
MATH PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS
Entering grades 2nd & 3rd – Students will learn, practice and acquire a number of strategies used in solving various math problems and puzzles. Students will be exposed to math experiences that further the development of number/operation sense and strategic thinking. Hands-on activities will be used to explore math concepts, break down word problems and develop reading and logic skills. This class will assist students in developing new skills and strengthen existing skills critical for math development in grades 2nd & 3rd.
3RD GRADE MATH INTENSIVE
Entering 3rd grade – This course is designed to teach the main strands of third grade math with a focus on operations and algebraic thinking; place value; fractions; measurement and data; and geometry as outlined by the California Common Core State Standards. Additionally, the course will address multiplication and divisions facts, patterns and properties; area and perimeter; sorting triangles and quadrilaterals; adding and subtracting decimals and money & solving word problems. The students will have the opportunity to develop an advanced repertoire of skills and strategies in an environment that encourages critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity. The concepts taught in this class will assist students in acquiring the mathematical knowledge needed for the next grade level.
4TH GRADE MATH INTENSIVE
Entering 4th grade – This class will introduce students to themes and concepts of algebra, geometry and statistics. Students will use hands-on applications and problem solving exercises designed to promote conceptual understanding and enhance logical thinking skills. Additional math topics include place value, rounding, estimating, identifying prime & composite numbers and prime factoring. Fundamentals of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division will be practiced through complex problem solving.
5TH GRADE PRE-ALGEBRA PREP
Entering 5th grade – The class curriculum is aligned to the current Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. A strong understanding of concepts will help students solve real-world and mathematical problems. Students will deepen their ability to perform the four operations with whole numbers, integers, decimals and fractions. Special attention will be given to the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages. Students will write, simplify and solve algebraic expressions and simple equations. Students will deepen their knowledge of the coordinate plane and develop an understanding of how to use ratios and proportions to solve equations.
PRE-ALGEBRA: FOUNDATIONS FOR INEQUALITIES, LINEAR EQUATIONS, RATIOS & GRAPHS
Entering grades 6th & 7th – For students who will be enrolled in Pre-Algebra during the 2014-15 school year. Students will deepen their skill-level and conceptual understanding of fractions, decimals, percentages, integers, exponents, probability, logic and algebraic order of operations. Problem solving strategies will also be developed through group projects, brainteasers and hands-on activities.
ALGEBRA 1: FOUNDATIONS FOR LINEAR, QUADRATIC & EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Entering grades 8th & 9th – Prerequisite: For students who have completed Pre-Algebra and will be enrolled in Algebra 1 during the 2014-2015 school year. This class will introduce students to some major themes and concepts in first year algebra. Students will explore various components of algebra through hands on applications and problem solving exercises designed to promote conceptual understanding and enhance logical thinking skills. Topics covered will include: properties in algebra, solving and applying equations, polynomials, factoring, the Quadratic Formula, solving & graphing linear and variable equations, radical expressions and other select topics as time permits.
ALGEBRA 2: FOUNDATIONS FOR POLYNOMIAL, RATIONAL & LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS
Entering grades 9th & 10th – Prerequisites: For students who have completed Algebra 1 & Geometry, and will be enrolled in Algebra 2 during the 2014-2015 school year. This course emphasizes critical thinking, understanding of real world applications and the use of advanced problem solving techniques. Students will gain an understanding of functions via a graphical approach to understanding relations, including linear, quadratic, absolute value, exponentials and polynomial rational expressions by defining every relation as a transformation and translation of a parent function. Students should bring a pencil, eraser, small ruler, graph paper and their TI-84 calculator daily.
GEOMETRY AND SPATIAL SENSE
Entering grades 8th to 10th – Prerequisite: For students who will be enrolled in Geometry during the 2014-15 school year. This course will introduce students to Euclidean geometry and assist students in the understanding of 2- and 3- dimensional space. Students will develop important basic geometry skills and explore various proofs through logical deduction. The instructional program will include hands-on explorations of geometric transformations, similar and congruent polygons, area and volume of solids of 2-D and 3-D polygons and polyhedra and the Pythagorean theorem. This four-week enrichment class is not-for-credit. This class is not to be regarded as a substitute or replacement class for a traditional one-year high school geometry course. Fee includes book.
TRIGONOMETRY, FUNCTIONS AND APPLICATIONS
Entering grades 9th & 10th – Prerequisites: To enroll in this class, students must have already completed Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. Although students may be familiar with trigonometric ratios, this course uses trigonometric functions to begin their study. Students will learn to convert to radians, find arc and sector lengths, and then begin the study of the preliminary 6 trigonometric functions using the terminal ray of an angle in standard position, graph the functions and eventually make use of the unit circle. Real world applications will be presented. Students should bring a pencil, eraser, small ruler, graph paper and their TI-84 calculator daily.
DEBATE AND CRITICAL THINKING (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 6th to 10th – The challenge for young people, is to present new ideas to solve world issues. Presenting those ideas in a clear, logical and engaging style is a critical skill. This course refines students’ public speaking skills and introduces high school debate events: Parliamentary, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum. The focus will be on Public Forum with “real world” issues. We will hold an in-class tournament. This course is taught by one of the South Bay Debate League founders who is a Speech & Debate Team advisor. Come learn how to be an insanely great speaker.
Entering grades 4th & 5th – Students will learn how to strengthen their oral communication, project self-confidence and engage their audience. Students will be taught about word choice, projection, enunciation, eye contact and body language. Students will practice the necessary skills and learn valuable techniques to effectively capture and hold audience attention. As audience members, students will also learn active listening techniques and how to evaluate and provide appropriate feedback to their peers.
PUBLIC SPEAKING & DEBATE (Miller Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th – Students will learn the skills and techniques required for public speaking: communication skills, eye contact, voice projections, body contact and listening, and evaluation techniques. Students will practice presenting various types of speeches. Development of self-confidence and poise will be an integral part of this class.
ADVANCED HIGH SCHOOL WRITING (Miller Only)
Entering grades 9th & 10th – For students who want to prepare for advanced work in high school, who want to improve their writing in school, or who simply love to write, this is your course. No skill is more essential to academic success than writing. The better you write, the better you do in school. This course will improve student ability not only in academic and expository genres, but in all forms of written expression; it provides advanced writers with rigorous instruction and practice in all aspects of the writing process.
As a text, this course employs The Elements of Style by Strunk and White for decades a standard writing guide in college level programs. Introduction to this important book is one more head start students will receive from this class.
ADVANCED MIDDLE SCHOOL WRITING (Miller Only)
Entering grades 8th & 9th – As bright middle school students take that important step from elementary to secondary, it is imperative that they write, and write well. This course is all about writing well and about developing the skills to excel in all the writing tasks middle school demands. Students receive intensive daily instruction on writing technique, ample time to write and individual feedback on their work from the instructor.
The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, one of the most popular writing guides in the field, serves as the text for the course. It is a college level text, appropriate to the needs of advanced middle school writers.
CREATIVE WRITING AND SELF-EXPRESSION (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th & 7th – Join us as we explore the creative process of writing and develop new and more effective ways to express our thoughts. Students will be exposed to various writing exercises, styles, writing prompts and strategies for editing. Students will create original short stories, poems, and magazine/journal articles during this class utilizing the skills they are learning daily. Each class will include reading, writing, and collaboration with other students and instructor led discussions on writing techniques. Come explore the writer within.
Entering grades 6th & 7th – This class will teach students how to recognize and write the different types of essays that will help them excel in middle school, high school and beyond. Students will develop writing skills that enable them to compose personal narratives, compare and contrast essays, and persuasive essays. Students will also learn how to engage in writing as a process with particular attention paid to word choice and vocabulary.
This highly interactive class will include peer review, writer’s workshops, and a final portfolio for students to take home that demonstrates each student’s progression as a writer. Students will be expected to bring a journal to class for daily note taking and writing practice.
ESSAY WRITING: CRAFTING THE ESSAY
Entering grades 7th to 9th – This course will focus on the following styles of writing: Personal Narrative, Expository Essay, Compare and Contrast Essay and Persuasive Essay. Vocabulary expansion, taken from PSAT and SAT lists, will be included. Students will be expected to keep a journal for note taking and reflections. Writing essays will involve a draft or two, peer editing and a final draft. Writers will take home a portfolio, which includes the final product. Teacher will use a variety of interactive activities to help students absorb new words and writing strategies. There will be a copious amount of writing in this class.
EXPOSITORY READING AND WRITING (Kennedy Only)
Entering Grades 9th & 10th – Expository reading and writing skills directly prepare students to excel on the critical reading and writing portions of the SAT I and II, the STAR tests, college placement tests, (California State University, English Placement Test), and other classroom and standardized tests; while also developing literacy skills critical to lifelong participation in the worlds of work and community.
Students will look at reading as a process, reading critically in preparation for the non-fiction texts they will encounter in high school, but even more often in college and the world outside of the classroom. Students will learn to make predictions about texts, analyze both content and rhetorical structures and properly use materials from texts to support their own written arguments. Readings will be enhanced through expository writing, most often through timed essays. While managing time, students will learn to organize ideas and construct persuasive arguments that further their own ideas through their individual voice.
READING AND VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT
Entering grades 2nd & 3rd – This class is designed for students reading at grade level who wish to strengthen their reading foundation. The course will focus on improving oral reading skills including fluency, increasing reading comprehension and developing vocabulary. Through a variety of reading materials, students will have the opportunity to develop their skills, strategies, and affective knowledge related to the reading process. Since learning is enhanced when the reading and writing processes are connected, writing will be integrated into the program.
READING: COMPREHENSION & ORAL FLUENCY
Entering grades 4th & 5th – Students will build strategic reading strategies to support their comprehension of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Using stimulating, engaging literature, we will bring fictional characters to life and make reading the most fun it can be. We will use the media of drama, games and art, as we role-play, debate, illustrate through cartooning and enjoy reading at its best.
While strengthening reading skills, we will create literature responses in a variety of ways, including shape books, pop-up books, stick puppets, dioramas, and memory games with flashcards. We will use different modalities and interact with all five senses, including tactile, listening and hands-on creative projects. Word building activities will include newspaper and magazine hunts, digraph searches, and student response journals to apply new vocabulary, descriptions of characters and scenes, and more.
SPELLING AND VOCABULARY ADVANCEMENT
Entering grades 4th & 5th – This course is designed for students who are interested in words and all that they encompass. It is a terrific class providing students with a focus on spelling improvement, vocabulary activities, learning idioms and more! Correct context will also be taught for proper use of words, as well as word origins, roots and idioms. Students will participate in actual spelling bees weekly to promote student confidence, poise and comfort within the arena of public speaking.
VOCABULARY, READING & WRITING SKILLS
Entering grades 6th & 7th – This course offers 6th and 7th grade students the opportunity to improve their ability in reading comprehension and writing skills as well as expand their academic vocabulary. Students learn comprehension strategies such as using context clues and inference to improve their reading skills and vocabulary. Readings from a variety of informational texts form the basis of student writing. Additionally, students learn to write a variety of sentence types and incorporate them into expository paragraphs and short essays. Academic vocabulary is acquired through the readings and incorporated into student writing. Students will leave the course with a portfolio of their work.
WRITING: PARAGRAPHS TO ESSAYS
Entering grades 4th & 5th – This class will emphasize the fundamentals of expository or informational writing. Students will acquire the skills needed to write well-organized paragraphs, summaries and essays. Students will also learn prewriting techniques, syntax, word choice, grammar, punctuation and the revision process. At the end of the course, students will have a portfolio to take home demonstrating their academic progress and achievement.
Entering grades 2nd & 3rd – Students will be exposed to different genres of writing and learn various crafts of writing through literature. Students will actively learn the writing process that consists of planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER PROGRAMMING USING JAVA (Miller Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th –Learning how to program a computer using the Java language is serious fun. We will be creating games that you can play on your laptop and we will be programming robots to do all kinds of cool stuff. This is a hands-on way to learn how to program computers. You “play” with Java and you can actually play the games that you create. Java is the language of choice for most Web programming because it is very powerful and runs on Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and other operating systems. You will learn the main concepts of object-oriented programming while gaining an understanding of Java programming in particular. Cost includes software and materials. Class size limited to 16 students. Students will need to bring their own laptop computer to class each day. Students are required to bring their own laptop computer to class each day. Laptops must to be running Windows 7 or 8, or Mac OS X v10.7.2 or later. Laptops need to have a minimum of 2GB of RAM and 6 GB of free disk drive space available to install class software and for using that software. Cost includes course software and materials. INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE AND CODING BOOT CAMP (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th – Code and create your own video games and interactive digital projects using Block coding languages! In this hands-on course, attendees will construct a working knowledge of the possibilities for coding their own video games and interactive digital projects using curriculum and resources developed by MIT and Carnegie Mellon Departments of Computer Science. Participants will develop an introductory understanding of the foundational concepts of computer science, problem solving and computational thinking skills as they are introduced to object-oriented programming. Come join us as we take a ride through the world of computer science and coding. Students must provide a relatively modern laptop with power adapter on which to work. Class size limited to 16 students. Students will need to bring their own PC or Macintosh laptop computer to class each day along with pencils, eraser and a notebook.

Entering grades 7th to 9th – Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop computers for each student. Programming concepts and techniques are introduced and practiced through a series of fun programming examples. Topics include: using variables, creating a Java applet, simple graphics, defining new object classes, interactive applet with buttons, animation, creating a simple interactive game, and programming a wheeled “Finch” robot. Class sessions include time to work on the programs with help from the instructor. Some homework time will be required to complete the lessons. Students should have a USB flash drive to take their class work home. Class size limited to 16 students.
JAVA GREENFOOT GAMES AND SIMULATIONS (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th – Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop computers for each student. Greenfoot provides a framework for easily programming interactive 2-D simulations and games based on a World and Actor model. Programming concepts and techniques are introduced and practiced through a series of fun programming examples such as creating physics simulations, simple interactive games, and programming a wheeled “Finch” robot. Students will use the Java programming language to define objects, variables and methods for implementing their simulations and games. Class sessions include time to work on the programs with help from the instructor. Some homework time will be required to complete the lessons. Students should have a USB flash drive to take their class work home. Class size limited to 16 students.
LEGO COMPUTER ROBOTICS: INGENIOUS ENGINEERING (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 8th – Explore the world of mechanical and computer engineering! In this class, you and a partner will build at least four different machines using vintage Apple computers and LEGO dacta© sets that include motors, lamps, sound, pulleys, gears, axles and sensors! Hook up your LEGO creation to the interface board and then create and write your Logo procedures. This Control Lab interface board runs up to nine electrical outputs and eight sensor inputs simultaneously, the equivalent of three RCX bricks. While this class does not use the Mindstorms systems, Control Lab’s superior capabilities, text based programming language and variety of project choices, make it the best option for student learning and skill building. You will enjoy this course immensely as you progress in your programming and building skills and your robots become more complex in nature. Cost includes materials and classroom use of computers.
LEGO COMPUTER ROBOTICS: NXT (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 6th to 8th – This class is an in-depth exploration of building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms® NXT Robotics System. Students will practice construction and programming with the NXT intelligent brick with servo style motors, touch sensors, ultrasonic sensor, light sensor and the color sensor. Students build a variety of robots and program them with a computer to move, react and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Students work in pairs and small teams sharing a robotics kit and computer. This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League. Prior experience in robotics is a plus but not required. Cost includes materials and classroom use of computers.
LEGO COMPUTER ROBOTICS: MINDSTORMS® EV3 (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 7th to 9th – Using the newest technology available from LEGO® Education students will gain practical hands-on-experience using science, technology, engineering and math concepts. This course is designed for students who want to expand their programming skills to the next stage using EV3, Data-logging and Cad software. Students will develop creative thinking and problem solving knowledge while they learn core-engineering principles. Working in teams, students will construct their robot designs using sensors, motors and LEGO® Technic building elements. Prior experience in robotics is a plus but not required. Cost includes materials and classroom use of computers.
VIDEO GAME CREATION: DESIGN AND PROGRAM WITH FLASH (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 8th – In this hands-on course, students will explore the world of game creation by designing, programming and developing their own games in Adobe Flash. The Flash environment is fabulous for learning both coding and graphic design skills. Students will plan their game themes based on core curriculum concepts. They will also design game strategies that players can use to learn the concepts each game is designed to teach. These game creation experiences will replicate work experiences that students may encounter in future careers. Skills include brainstorming, mind mapping, storyboard and flowcharting, team collaboration, along with programming graphic design and software mastery. Cost includes materials and classroom use of laptop or tablet computers for each student.
ASTRONOMY LAB: MARS, STARS AND PULSARS! (Faria Only)
Entering grades 4th &5th – This unique project based, hands-on class will utilize various instruments to explore the Sun, Moon, planets and stars. Using special telescopes we will safely view the Sun to see and measure sunspots. We will fly to the moon (via the classroom) to learn about its phases, craters, oceans and mountains. Planets will be explored as we create a Venus topography box, as well as attempt to capture meteorites and create a comet all during class. A 3D constellation will also be built. Students will build telescopes to keep and use, as well as a simple spectroscope to learn how astronomers analyze the composition of stars. We will “hear” a Pulsar, and see invisible light!
Our class will conclude with a special space travel unit: Small groups of students will design spacecraft that could fly to Mars and return to Earth. Students will research and brainstorm to provide answers to the problems scientists face when designing a craft for lengthy space travel. A NASA scientist will visit the class to examine student designs and provide students with suggestions for improved space travel vehicles. This project will require students to use critical thinking, creative problem solving skills, teamwork and the use of oral and written communication.
ASTRONOMY: BLACK HOLES, GALAXIES & QUASARS
Entering grades 6th to 8th – We will study the origins of our solar system. Learn to navigate around the night sky; what causes solar and lunar eclipses and how asteroids are formed. Visit planets in our solar system and explore planets in other solar systems. Learn where comets, asteroids and meteors had their beginnings, what they are composed of, and possibly even discover micrometeorites here on Earth. Study how astronomers classify stars and how black holes originate. Drop in on a Black Hole and learn about White Holes! Investigate gravity and space-time. Learn how someday the star Betelgeuse will run out of fuel, collapse under its own weight and then rebound in a spectacular supernova explosion. Explore current data regarding the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, electromagnetic radiation and more.
Entering grades 9th & 10th – This course will help prepare students who will enter into chemistry during the next school year. It is designed to preview main topics addressed in high school chemistry. This course will cover topics such as dimensional analysis, the periodic table, Stoichiometry and the gas laws. Students will be challenged to solve problems and answer complex questions through pair and group work. Although this is not a lab class, students will complete activities and projects such as Adopt an Element, Building your own Periodic Table and Creating Molecule Models.
FUN WITH PHYSICS
Entering grades 6th & 7th – Physics examines the world and universe around each of us: what we experience and how we can explain it. The class is designed to help you better describe the physical world in a way that you can use to understand, to apply to problem solving, and to make critical decisions. We will be learning key physics principles with exciting labs and projects using simple and everyday materials.
SCIENCE FOR BETTER BRAINS!
Entering grades 4th & 5th – Come boost your brainpower through physical, earth and life science. Experiment with water densities; take a walk alongside Edison as he invents the light bulb by working with static electricity (float a butterfly!); build a working motor; use a telescope to spot the sun, explore space missions of the past and present; use microscopes to discover a world smaller than our eyes can see; and finally learn about bioluminescence plus other physical and chemical reactions, and much, much more!
Entering grades 6th to 10th – This course will include skill drills, games, techniques and strategy sessions. If you enjoy basketball, this is the class for you. This is a Co-Ed class. Rubber soled athletic shoes are required for this class.
BASKETBALL SKILLS AND DRILLS
Entering grades 4th & 5th – Students will develop and improve their basketball talent along with a better understanding and appreciation of this exciting, fast-paced sport. Through a variety of drills and games, students will learn and practice basic basketball skills emphasizing the fundamentals of dribbling, passing and shooting. Teamwork, self-confidence and sportsmanship will be stressed on a daily basis. Modifications will be made to accommodate all skill levels. This is a Co-Ed class. Rubber soled athletic shoes are required for this class. Classes will be held outdoors so bring water bottle, sunscreen & hat. Class size is limited to 12 students.
CHESS SKILLS AND TOURNAMENTS (Faria Only)
Entering grades 4th & 5th – This course will provide basic instruction and intermediate strategies. In the process, students will increase their planning and problem solving abilities. They will develop their ability to “see the board” and to make thoughtfulness their ally. Chess promotes logic, problem solving and concentration. Students will review basic moves, learn strategies that are more advanced and participate in tournaments.
TABLE TENNIS (Kennedy Only)
Entering grades 6th to 8th – Table tennis is the second most popular participation sport in the world. Played for recreation at the beginner and top levels, it is a World Class sport requiring years of dedication, training and fitness! Students will learn basic strokes, footwork, drills, strategies and skills and the rules of the game. Table tennis combines technique, speed, spin, power, touch, smarts and concentration. Games and matches will be played based on practice drills. This is a Co-Ed class. Rubber soled athletic shoes are recommended. Class fee includes all equipment and materials.
VOLLEYBALL – BEGINNING (INDOOR) (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 9th – This course will teach basic volleyball skills including passing, setting and overhand, serving and hitting. Students will learn a new skill each day and apply that skill in a game environment. Students will also learn how to referee a game, including but not limited to the rules of rotation, substituting, hand signal techniques and proper context for whistle usage. This is a Co-Ed class. Requirements: All students must have gym shoes and kneepads. Water bottle recommended.
VOLLEYBALL – INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED (INDOOR) (Miller Only)
Entering grades 6th to 9th – This course is for students who have previous volleyball experience and are looking to develop their playing skills more fully. Students will build upon the beginning skills as described in the Volleyball – Beginning course. Requirements: All students must have gym shoes and kneepads. Water bottle recommended.
PSAT PREPARATION: VERBAL
Entering grades 8th to 10th – Students will enhance verbal skills necessary for the PSAT, which includes understanding passage-based fiction and non-fiction reading, identifying sentence errors, improving sentences and paragraphs, and developing vocabulary. There will be practice tests with explanations so students can build confidence, learn strategies and review the types of questions found on the PSAT. Class fee includes books and materials. Some homework will be assigned.
