Writing & Reading Center Guidelines and Policies

How to Get the Most Out of Tutoring

  • Come prepared. Do as much work as you can on your own, and bring all materials you will need to work on your assignment.
  • Think about how the tutor to help you. Do you need help understanding a reading? Getting ideas for an essay? Organizing your ideas?  Checking your grammar or word choice?  Since you can't do everything in one session, try to focus on the most important issues.
  • Don't be shy! Tutors want to help you, but may not know how.  Let them know if you don't understand.  Talk to a tutor supervisor if you have questions or concerns about your tutoring session.

Drop-In Tutoring

  • Drop-in tutoring begins week 2 of each quarter.
  • Please sign in and wait for a drop-in tutor to become available. The tutor will call your name on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • You may request up to two 30-minute drop-in sessions per day. During busy times we may limit tutoring to accommodate more students.
  • If you do not respond when contacted by a tutor be aware that another student may take your time and you may need to request again.
  • Please sign in for drop-in sessions at least one hour before closing.
  • Visit the WRC webpage for more information.

Weekly Individual Tutoring

  • Weekly individual tutoring usually begins in week 3 or 4 of the quarter.
  • Weekly individual tutoring is reserved for students in pre-college level (below EWRT 1A/ESL 5) writing and reading courses. If you are in a college-level class and have special needs, please contact SSC staff.
  • Weekly individual tutoring provides one-hour per week with the same tutor for the entire quarter.
  • Students who have been assigned a weekly individual tutor may use drop-in tutoring when available, but priority goes to students who are not using other forms of tutoring.
  • If you do not respond when contacted by a tutor, be aware that another student may take your time and you may need to request again.
  • Please request weekly individual tutoring as early in the quarter as possible as tutoring fills quickly. It is likely that we not assign a tutor if you request after week 4 of the quarter.
  • Visit the WRC weekly individual tutoring webpage for signing up or for more information.
