Careers in Automotive TechnologyAutomotive technicians help keep America rolling - literally.Their primary duty is to identify and repair problems with cars and trucks, but they also perform the general maintenance that keeps vehicles running in good condition. Technicians work in settings from independent repair shops to new car dealerships, and they can apply everything from a large, generalized knowledge of auto repair to specialized training specific to components such as brakes, transmissions, engines, electronics and air conditioning. Employment OutlookThe California Employment Development Department (EDD) collects data about the state’s workforce. These data include information about the number of people employed in the field, job outlook, and wage information. The California EDD predicts for the period 2008-2018 demand for automotive service technicians to remain steady. With a significant number of automotive technicians reaching retirement age, most openings will be due to separations.
