Careers in Film Production

Work in the film industry involves a variety of skills: producing, writing, manually constructing and tearing down production sets, operating cameras, and editing sound and picture. At the core of the film industry are opportunities for people who are stimulated by creative work and driven to be "behind-the-scenes" players in the entertainment industry and documentary film making. Because film is a highly attractive career field, competition for jobs can be intense. Film work also tends to be regional, with major metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, offering more opportunity than others.  The California Employment Development Department estimates film and video editing opportunities for the period 2002-2012 to grow from around 4,000 to 5,200, a 30% increase (Source: Labor Market Info www.labormarketinfo.edd.ca.gov).

Necessary Education and Skills for Career Success
Although individuals working in the film industry will usually choose a specialization (i.e. editing, photography, animation, production), a diverse background in all phases of filmmaking can increase career success. For instance, film productions are edited or enhanced with computer equipment, so skills in the latest technological trends are important. Film productions often involve large groups of people with varied responsibilities and backgrounds. Individuals who wish to work in the film industry must be prepared to work collectively in collaborative and creative groups. Good communication skills are essential.
