Careers in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a newly recognized category of laboratory professional in the state of California. These skilled workers are becoming integral members of the health care delivery system. MLTs collect, process and perform analytical tests of body fluids, cells and other substances; recognize factors that affect procedures and results; perform and monitor quality control within specific limits; perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment and instruments; apply basic scientific principles; learn new techniques, and practice safe work habits.
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) collects data about the state’s workforce. These data include information about the number of people employed in the field, job outlook, and wage information. The California EDD predicts for the period 2008-2018 the number of openings for medical and clinical laboratory technicians to increase by over 8%.
