Ballet all Levels

Ballet is a great way to gain strength, coordination and flexibility. It's also fun!  If you have never enrolled in Ballet at De Anza College before, sign up for Ballet I (regardless of previous training). Once you have taken Ballet I, sign up for Ballet II next time you take the class.  This system guarantees that you will be able to study ballet at De Anza College for 3 quarters.  Each dance class can accommodate students from all levels of technique.  It is normal for students to progress at different rates, but all are expected to give the art form their full attention and best effort.

Since the beginning of the class is done while holding onto the ballet barre for support, ballet is also a fairly "safe" class for the first time dance student.  Students will need to wear appropriate dance attire (much of today's current fashions will work) and ballet shoes.  Details on this will be given on the first day of class.  Come prepared to dance. Any attire on the first day will be fine.

The development of classical ballet occurred in the courts of Russia, from 1850 to 1900. I teach this 150 year old art form, but I teach it incorporating today's modern knowledge of kinesiology.

For 1st time dance students, the classical lines and movements used in ballet will be demystified, kept simple and explained.  One may begin the study of ballet at any age. In fact, I did not train in ballet until I was in college.
For the advanced student, this is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of ballet technique. For years one has heard the words, "turn out," but few ballet instructors will point out the location of the 6 outward rotator muscles at the top of the femur, critical for stability when you plie' or fondue..This type of information will be included in my class, as will the opportunity to refine your torso alignment, master the classical lines of ballet, build strength, increase performance skills, etc.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all.  Invite a friend to join you.

Sincerely,

Instructor Shaw

PS  I do not teach this course every quarter, so be sure to sign up when it is offered!
