De Anza Auto Tech students collected more than 4,000 cans of food this year during their 2018 Canned Food Drive – to help fellow students in need.

Donated food, toiletries and other items were given to the De Anza Food Pantry, operated by the Office of Outreach to help students who qualify for food assistance. Food insecurity is a challenge for many community college students. Last year, De Anza's Food Pantry helped more than 400 students.

Students in the Auto Tech program have been conducting the annual food drive for more than 15 years, said instructor Pete Vernazza. In the past, they have donated collected items to West Valley Community Services, a nonprofit agency. This year they decided to assist fellow students through the Food Pantry.

Auto Tech students donate personally to the drive and solicit contributions from others. In addition, the Auto Tech Club purchased $600 worth of items with club funds, Vernazza said.

Michael Dao, Dyana Gutierrez, Ariel Martinez and Nate Purcell were among the students who helped with this year’s collections, as shown in the photos above.
